Assignment: What is New Urbanism?

1. Explore the web site for the Congress for the New Urbanism.

From this link, click on text that says “About New Urbanism” in the upper left hand corner. Click on the text What is New Urbanism, and begin the tour (Tours 1-4). If you are interested, the “About New Urbanism” page also has a directory of locations of New Urbanist projects in Colorado.

2. Explore the National Geographic web feature on Urban Sprawl:

From this link, click on the box that says, “Explore a New Urbanist Neighborhood”. There are several features to this page you should explore.

a. Move your mouse over different parts of this neighborhood and read about the benefits of each idea.
b. After reading about the idea, click on the image. A box should come up with pictures and explanations of particular topics comparing urban sprawl with new urbanist ideas. Scroll down each window and read about the different strategies for city planning.

Go back to the original site, and then click on the words “Related National Geographic Magazine feature” There are several features to this page you should explore:

a. Click on each of the photos on the left side of the page and read the author and photographer’s notes.
b. Click on the Did You Know text in the upper left hand corner of the page (the original Feature page) and read some interesting facts.
c. Surf the available links
d. Peruse the Bibliography and Resources listed at the bottom of the Features page. .
