Colorado Springs Historic Trolleys - 1880s to 2000s

  Nothing rolls as swiftly and easily as a steel wheel on a steel rail.  For this reason, trolley cars were quickly established as the best way to move people  around cities in the era prior to the automobile.  Virtually every city in the United States, large and small, developed a trolley car system in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Before there were electric streetcars, horse drawn cars such as this one provided passenger service around Colorado Springs.  This particular horse car was brought out for display purposes in 1915.

The same intersection at a later date.  The original Antlers Hotel burned to the ground and was replaced by the twin-towered Antlers Hotel in the background.  This model of street car was called a Birney, the name of the company that manufactured it.
