New Towns are designed to be as pedestrian-friendly as possible. This pedestrian bridge over the canal connects the shopping area to a parking lot and a playground. |
This little sitting area, located at the other end of the pedestrian bridge over the canal, offers shoppers a place to rest, relax, and converse. |
Here is the parking lot.
Notice how the heavy landscaping of trees and shrubs hides the automobiles from downtown Hemel Hempstead. Note the playground in the background. |
The playground appears to have been an after-thought. A portion of the parking lot was fenced off and the playground installed on the asphalt parking surface. Planners have to be flexible and make changes based on experience. |
