Topics: Differentials*, the Mean Value Theorem, L'Hospital's rule, Newton's method*, finding areas using calculus and/or ingenious methods. The Geometric series.
Quiz Two: where incr, decr, where max/min, where i.p., read graph visually
 

 

Tuesday  
To Prepare:  
Sections Covered: Sections 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, 5.5 
Topics: The fundamental theorem. Functions with their variable as a limit of integration. Substitution rule. 
Homework Three: Due by 5 p.m. today. 

 

Wednesday  
To Prepare: Look through the website at the cylindrical shells diagrams. Be familiar with work = force times distance. 
Sections Covered: Sections 6.1 - 6.4
Topics: Applications of the integral: Area, Volume, Work. 
Quiz Three: Using the closed interval method to find a max/min (4.1), 
Geometric series, and the harmonic series diverges (Section 11.2)
Riemann sums and finding areas (section 5.1 and 5.2) 

 

Thursday  
To Prepare: View Web images of Cycloids 
Sections Covered:  Section 8.1, 10.1 - 10.3, 7.2
Topics: The struggle for arclength. The area and arclength of the cycloid. Calculus with parametric curves.  Trigonometric integrals. 
Lab Two: 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Palmer 14. on parametrics

 

Friday  
To Prepare: Look at the polar graphs, in particular the five leaved rose and the limacon
Sections Covered: Section 10.4 - 6
Topics: Polar Coordinates. Calculus in polar coordinates
Homework Four: due today at 5:00 p.m.
