Example 2: Method of study.

  • Now you must select how you want to get the data for your study.
  • Here, your have found through your research that data already exists on these two topics in the "states" section of the GSS.
  • You could, however, create your own survey and collect information at the individual level.
  • This decision is important because it dictates who you can generalize the data to.
  • Using the states data only allows you to make generalizations about the state level. A question that could be used here is "How does a state's level of education funding relate to the poverty level in that state?"
  • Creating your own survey and distributing it to a representative sample will allow you to make statements about the individual level. You could ask the question "How does one's level of education relate to their income?" for example.
