The Ultimate Homework Assignment
- In
this problem you will explore the connection between the Scaliger day
count, and the Mayan Long Count.
- Compute
the Julian Day Number for December 23rd, 2012. (This is a Gregorian date).
- Recall
that this is the last day of the long count – the end of the world J. By subtraction (and making use of the
length of the long count), compute the Julian day number for the first
day of the long count.
- Verify
your answer in part (b), by recalling that the first day of the long
count is September 8, 3114BC. (In
practice, using the Julian day number is exactly the way modern
chronologists would compute these dates!)
- Find
the Julian date for the day with the Julian day number 1000000.
