MA 117 Probability and Statistics Math - Block 4 - 2001

Reading in preparation for Wednesday, Week Two:

Chapter Twenty
Read through the dialogue in chapter 20, page 355 to page 358

1. In the third passage of the Sociologist on p. 356, the sociologist is concerned about a good distribution of the attributes in the population. She wants to handpick the sample. What do you think of that?

2. The statistician is defending his computer after Table 1. Is he being overly defensive? Can you make a calculation based on a box model to see if this is chance error at work, or if it really is a computer problem?

3. How many M/F’s come out of 250 samples of 100 people?

4. Is the Statistician talking down to the Sociologist too much?

Read through the correction factor, Section 20.4

1. The correction factor adjusts the S.E. for the fact that simple random sampling is made without replacement rather than with replacement. If we made a simple random sample of size 25 from Colorado College which has 1900 students, what would the correction factor be?

2. What is the correction factor for a Gallup poll which samples 4000 voters out of 200,000,000?
