MA 117 Probability and Statistics Math - Block 4 - 2001

Reading in preparation for Thursday, Day Four:

Chapter Thirteen
Read about the frequency theory of probability, pp. 221 - 225.

1. Why did Abraham de Moivre flee to England?

2. In what century/centuries did de Moivre live?

3. What have we studied already which was related to the name de Moivre?

4. What do the extremes of 0% chance and 100% chance represent? What is an example of an event with 0% chance? With 100% chance?

5. If a box contains the tickets 1,2,3,4, is any one ticket more likely than another to be drawn at random?

6. Consider the event "The weather is sunny today". What is the opposite event, and why can it not be "The weather is rainy today"?

7. If there is a 70% chance of rain today, then what is the chance of the opposite event?

8. What is the chance of drawing an ace from a standard deck of 52 cards (see the description on p. 226, start of section 2.)

Read about conditional probability on pp. 226 - 227.

9. Suppose that a spade is drawn from the deck and not replaced. What is the chance that you will draw a second heart, i.e. what is P(2nd card spade|1st card spade)?

10. Find P(2nd card heart|1st card spade).

11. Suppose that all the face cards are removed from the standard deck of 52 cards. (Face cards are kings, queens and jacks).

A) What is the chance that you will draw a king?

B) What is the chance that you will draw the 10 of hearts?

12. Answer question 3 from exercise set B.

Read about the multiplication rule, pp. 228 - 229.

13. Read example three. Then answer:

A) What is the chance of drawing two cards without replacement, and getting a blue and then a white card?

B) What is the chance of drawing two cards with replacement, and getting a blue and then a white card?

Read about independence, pp. 230 - 231

14. Which of the following events are independent?

A) 1st event: A card is drawn from a full deck and replaced. 2nd event: Another card is drawn from the deck.

B) 1st event: A card is drawn from a full deck and not replaced. 2nd event: Another card is drawn from the deck.

C) 1st event: A die is rolled. 2nd event: Another die is rolled.
