MA 128 Calculus II - Block II 2001

WEEK ONE -  DETAILED SCHEDULE AND HOMEWORK

Monday
Sections Covered: Chapter 5, Sections 6.1 and 6.2
Topics: Introduction. Riemann sums. Review of integration in calculus I. Substitution method
for integration. Calculating areas. Calculating volumes by using integrals (cross sectional method)
To Prepare: Try some of the substitution examples 1 through 11 from chapter 5.

Tuesday
Sections Covered: Sections 6.3 and 6.4
Topics: More practice with volumes. The method of cylindrical shells. Work (i.e. the energy quantity from physics).
To Prepare: Look through the website at the cylindrical shells diagrams. Be familiar with work = force times distance.
Quiz One: Integration by Substitution. Areas and Volumes by X-section method (turn in by 3:00 p.m. to my office, room 134).

Wednesday
Sections Covered: Sections 6.5, and 7.1 to 7.3
Topics: Average value of a function. Methods of integration: (i) Integration by Parts (ii) Trigonometric Integrals (iii) Trigonometric Substitution. We will introduce all integration methods quickly, and then practice them throughout the week.
To Prepare: Recall basic trigonometric identities.
Homework One: Due today by 5 p.m. in the Green labelled boxes beside Palmer 130.

Thursday
Sections Covered: Sections 7.3 and 7.4, 7.6 and part of 7.7
Topics: (iii) Trigonometric Substitution. (iv) Partial Fractions. Approximate integration.
To Prepare: Recall how to factor quadratics, and perhaps long division of polynomials!
Lab One: 1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. in Palmer 14. Introduction to using Mathematica. Evaluating integrals by computer, both algebraically and numerically.

Friday
Sections Covered: Sections 7.5, 7.7 and part of 7.8
Topics: Practicing all methods of integration (as well as substitution!). Using tables to evaluate integrals. Improper integrals.
To Prepare: Review and Practice! our four new methods of integration.
Homework Two: due today at 5:00 p.m.
Quiz Two: (turn in by 3:00 p.m. to my office, room 134). Sections 1, 2, and 3 of chapter 7 (Methods of Integration.) Work problems will not be on this quiz.

Suggested Homework Problems
Try out the following problems for practice. The answers to odd numbered questions are in the back of the book. Make sure you can get the right answers most of the time, without looking at the answers. Come for help if you are having problems.
Chapter Six
Section 1 eoo 1 - 31; 41, 45 (note: eoo stands for every other odd)
Section 2 eoo 1 - 35; 39, 41, 47, 48, 59
Section 3 eoo 1 - 25; 29, 31
Section 4 odd 1 - 9; 15, 17
