FILM/VIDEO NOTES ASSIGNMENT

I expect you to take notes each time you see a video for the class. You will be responsible for the content of these videos (in other words, information from them will be included exams and/or overnight or in-class writing assignments). For the videos in the first week, on Bronislaw Malinowski, Franz Boas, and Margaret Mead, concentrate on information: take detailed notes that you would be able to use to write an essay from or as a study aid. Think about what characterizes these three anthropologists, how they are similar in their approaches and how they are different; pay attention to the time periods they worked in, their national and global contexts, and how they conceptualized the work they were doing.

For the videos in subsequent weeks, I want you to focus less on specific information (though you should still have a basic grasp of their content) and more on the themes, issues and questions that these videos suggest. Your notes should reflect this; rather than being simply informational, your notes should be a series of comments, questions, themes, and or issues that reflect your own engagement with the material.

I will ask for these notes to be handed in, but they do not need to be typed or formally written. They are notes, not essays.
