LITTLE ROCK CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL

In September of 1957, the School Board in Little Rock, Arkansas, selected nine black students to racially integrate Little Rock Central High School, the major white high school in Little Rock.

These students subsequently became known as "the Little Rock Nine."

Orval Faubus, the Governor of Arkansas, was a racial segregationist.

He sent the Arkansas National Guard to Central High School to keep the black students out and prevent racial integration.

Dwight D. Eisenhower, President of the United States, decided to enforce the Supreme Court decision that called for racially integrated public schools.

President Eisenhower federalized the Arkansas National Guard and ordered it away from Little Rock.

"Ike" then sent regular U.S. Army troops to racially integrate Central High School.

Little Rock Central High School is a significant architectural structure.

The building is seven stories high and has four statues decorating the top of the elaborate front entrance.
