By the end of the battle, John Brown and his raiders were surrounded by U.S. troops in this building, known as John Brown's Fort. John Brown and his band were forced to surrender. They subsequently were tried, convicted, and hanged on a charge of armed rebellion against the United States. |
Harper's Ferry was a railroad junction
as well as an industrial center.
This bridge carries railroad tracks across the Potomac River. It now is also used as a biker-hiker trail. |
At the start of their raid, John Brown
and his men attacked the railroad station.
They killed a free black man, Heyward Shepherd, who was working at the train station for the railroad. |
Heyward Shepherd was honored in the South because he lost his life to John Brown's raiders. This stone monument to Shepherd was erected by the Daughters of the Confederacy. |
