STOCKHOLM Sweden is small in population but hopes to increase its importance by building Stockholm into one of the great cities of Europe. This is an overview of central Stockholm. |
The Swedish plan is to surround
Stockholm with high-density new towns with natural open space in between
the towns.
The Swedish "new town look" is groups of high-rise buildings surrounded by forests and fields. |
In the effort to increase Stockholm's
population, the Swedes do not hesitate to build housing on a large
scale.
Note the giant size of the multi-family building across the harbor. |
This is the city hall in Stockholm. There is a long tradition in Sweden of government involvement in city planning and design. Thus the Swedes are comfortable with the details of land use and urban design being mainly determined by government rather than private enterprise real estate developers. |
