By the time the merchandise cars rolled by the westbound semaphore, the blade had dropped to "stop."

As the Southwest Chief chugged on its way to the west, the eastbound semaphore moved to the vertical "go" position.

Shortly thereafter, as the train moved further away, the westbound semaphore raised to the "caution" position.

Then, once the Southwest Chief was long gone, both semaphores moved into the vertical "proceed" position.

It was a sign that no train was expected.
