It was 2002, and the Amtrak locomotive paint scheme had changed to dark blue and silver. The Southwest Chief once again encountered the wig-wag at Delhi. |
The blue-and-silver paint scheme was
named "Acela" for the high-speed East Coast trains on which it
first appeared.
The newly-painted diesels climbed Raton Pass. |
As was customary in 2002, a long string of merchandise cars and RoadRailers brought up the end of the Southwest Chief. |
This passing siding is geographically north, but railroad east, of Wagon Mound, New Mexico. The Chief raced by the semaphores at the west end of the siding. |
