The base of the clock tower serves as a place for art and information. Perhaps this map shows the various industries in the area surrounding Stevenage. |
Stevenage was the first new town
undertaken by the British after World War Two.
This panel in the base of the clock tower took proper note of early progress building the new town. |
The clock tower rises out of a water
feature - a shallow pool with a fountain.
The trees, large and small, help to break up the monotony of the walking area, which is paved with hand-set stones. |
The planners of Stevenage clearly intended for the central square, with the pool and fountain and clock tower, to be a place where people would gather informally and "hang out," particularly younger people. On a balmy Saturday afternoon in May, groups of young people were doing exactly what the new town planners intended. |
