I teach in the Political Science Department at Colorado College.  My research lies at the intersection of governance and rural development.  I am interested in how the historical processes of state formation and capitalist development shape the manner in which the frontier (space and people) is integrated into the frameworks of the modern state and the world system.  This research has broader implications for agrarian and environmental change, social movements, and rural development.
