Reading List

The Roman world

  • Italian and provincial from 8th-4th or 3rd cent. BCE
  • a Mediterranean/Hellenistic power from 3rd-1st, and
  • two stages--divided in the late 2nd-early 3rd cent. CE--of a world empire from then til whenever it "fell".

It can be viewed

  • chronologically: magistrates, laws, foundations, battles, emperors
  • as a series of social systems
  • as a series of political systems
  • as a series of economic systems
  • as a series of cultural (educational, religious) systems
  • as a series of modern "receptions" of the above

It raises a series of questions that we will discuss.
