Door #3

CSGA recently purchased some Ancients troops fom the Hellenistic era using club funds. The idea here is to introduce a new gaming option with club troops, encourage members to establish their own armies, recover club funds through resale of the troops, and purchase soldiers from a new era to promote a new game option at the club. Gaming in miniature requires time and/or money to build a new army, but unless there is significant exposure to a particular game system, the likelihood of investment is low. We shall see how this club investment in Ancients fares over the next couple of years.

What Game System? This is always the next question after you pick the historical era. Some of our members are bulding their armies to use Warhammer Ancient Battles. Some of us even have some experience with DBA. Recently, a few of us invested the time and energy to explore Frank Chadwick's Ancient Conquest which is in beta test and is available on the web. This is one complex game, rich in execution, but a bit too much "friction" for our tastes (sort of like Empire in Napoleonics to use an extreme analogy).

NEW ANCIENTS RULES BELOW!!!!

The Answer (possibly)- "Go Tell the Spartans..." is a set of rules that is available as a free download from this site. These rules are still in beta test at this moment (v1.53 [new again and very much improved, thanks to playtesting by Mike Garland, Ed Strecker and Erick Nason] now available)- but they may be near completion at this point; future rules changes will focus on "chrome". The latest change has eliminated most ofthe klutzy modifiers by incorporating many of them into a single unit property, and the fire-melee-recoil rules have been greatly simplified. Downloads include the rules, a large unit roster (an Excel spreadsheet in ZIP format) that prints out an army chart with specifications for only your army and also calculates changes in unit properties and costs as you modify unit qualities, and an OB-Tagmaker Excel spreadsheet that semi-automatically creates unit tags as you fill out an OB. Just click on the Unit Type on Page 2 (Elephants, for example), and you get a dropdown list; select the unit, and all the unit specs are filled out on your tag (IF you have completed your OB on Page 1). All of these elements are primarily authored by Lamont Anderson.
