I am a sociologist who is interested in gender, sexuality, inequality, and youth. A new edition of my award winning book about sexuality and gender in high school, Dude, You're a Fag: Masculinity and Sexuality in High School is available from the University of California Press.
My current projects focus on contemporary youth cultures. More specifically I examine young people’s practices of love and romance. Initial findings are documented in the book, Hanging Out, Geeking Out and Messing Around: Living and Learning with New Media. With my co-author, Natalie Boero, I have also been examining the formation and maintenance of online eating disorder communities (detailed in the first of a series of articles, “Pro-Anorexia Communities and Online Interaction”). We talk about our findings in this podcast.
You can find me Tweeting, Tumbling, or blogging at Social (in)Queery.
As of July 2013 I will be an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Oregon.
