THE ST. CHARLES LINE IN
NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA

The City of New Orleans made the fortunate decision to keep a number of old street cars dating from the 1920s and run them in regular service into the 21st Century.  The result is a historic trolley line which simultaneously provides reliable street car service.  This classic trolley car system is called the St. Charles Line.

Looking much like it looked almost 70 years earlier when it was manufactured, a St. Charles Line trolley rolls down the street in New Orleans in the 1990s.  Note that the track area has been landscaped with green grass and shrubbery.

Two cars pass on the St. Charles Line, each one heading in a different direction.  To reverse direction with these street cars, all the driver has to do is lower the trolley pole at one end and raise it at the other.

Frequency of service is a major issue in keeping street car lines viable.  People do not like to wait a long time for the next trolley, particularly in inclement weather.  The St. Charles Line does a good job of having the trolleys run close together.
