THE ST. CHARLES LINE
IN The City of New Orleans made the fortunate decision to keep a number of old street cars dating from the 1920s and run them in regular service into the 21st Century. The result is a historic trolley line which simultaneously provides reliable street car service. This classic trolley car system is called the St. Charles Line. |
Looking much like it looked almost 70 years earlier when it was manufactured, a St. Charles Line trolley rolls down the street in New Orleans in the 1990s. Note that the track area has been landscaped with green grass and shrubbery. |
Two cars pass on the St. Charles Line, each one heading in a different direction. To reverse direction with these street cars, all the driver has to do is lower the trolley pole at one end and raise it at the other. |
Frequency of service is a major issue in keeping street car lines viable. People do not like to wait a long time for the next trolley, particularly in inclement weather. The St. Charles Line does a good job of having the trolleys run close together. |
