SUNSET FOR SEMAPHORES On a stretch of the old Santa Fe Railroad, from Kansas to Colorado to New Mexico, semaphore signals continued to regulate train traffic. By the year 2000, most of the semaphores had been replaced with newer "searchlight" signals, but a number of working semaphores remained in southern Colorado and northern New Mexico. |
Manufactured by Union Switch and Signal, the old semaphores were technically known as T2 Upper Quadrant Semaphores. This model of semaphore signal was first installed on this rail route in the 1920s. Enjoy the old Santa Fe semaphores as they appeared in their final years of active use:
