A Few Printed Sources on the Life and Works of Mozart

There have been many publications dealing with all or segments of Mozart's life and musical output. Many of these are excellent, but they are too numerous to list here. The following are just a few of the most useful and central reference works.

Anderson, Emily, ed. The Letters of Mozart and his Family (3rd Edition).
This contains all the correspondence known at the time of its publication (1966). It is fascinating reading.

Deutsch, Otto Erich.  Mozart, A Documentary Biography.
A true documented biography.  There is very little text, rather just translations of important documents that
          inform us about Mozart's life.

Köchel, Ludwig.  Chronologisch-thematisches Verzeichnis sämtlicher Tonwerke Wolfgang Amadé Mozart (7th Edition).
This is the definitive catalogue of Mozart's works.

Einstein, Alfred. Mozart, his Character, his Work.
Although dated, this remains a definitive interpretation of Mozart's life and works. Einstein's insights
          are profound.

Gutman, Robert W. Mozart. A Cultural Bibliography.
The newest study of Mozart, this book mixes biography with a study of his music.

Solomon, Maynard. Mozart. A Life.

This is another new, lengthy and very detailed biographical study of Mozart. It is, at times, a psychologica
          study of some interest.

Osborne, Charles. The Complete Operas of Mozart.
The best of the genre studies on the operas.
