ABSTRACT ALGEBRA I

Instructors: Marlow Anderson (Palmer 140) & Dave Roeder (Palmer 139)

Text: A First Course in Abstract Algebra, by Anderson & Feil

Class Time: We will meet each morning at 9 a.m.

Exams: There will be two in-class exams; they will be closed book, notes and colleagues. The midterm takes place on Friday, November 12th, and the final exam on Wednesday, November 24th. Each of these exams will count for 25% of your grade.

Quizzes: There will be 6 short quizzes, which are also closed book, notes and colleagues. We will make the quizzes available after class on the days they are scheduled; they are due by 2 p.m. that afternoon.

Homework: Most days we will assign a few hand-in homework problems, which are due the class day after they are assigned, by 3:30 p.m. Feel free to discuss these problems with your colleagues in class; however, your finished write-up of the problem should be your own. From time to time we may ask some of you (or we may take volunteers) to present some problems to the class.

Oral Presentations: On the last two class days before the final, students will pair up as teams to make brief presentations on extra topics not covered in class. We will supply a list of potential topics soon. The Homework and Oral Presentations will together make up the remaining 25% of your grade for the course.
